Accredited vs. “Traceable” Calibration — The Difference That Fails Audits
Two certificates can both say "NIST traceable" and mean very different things. One might be accredited; the other might be a self-declaration. Knowing which you have — and which your customer requires — prevents an ugly audit surprise.

Traceable calibration
A traceable calibration uses standards tied through a documented chain back to a national standard. That is necessary but not sufficient: nothing in a bare traceability claim is independently verified. The lab is asserting its own competence and its own uncertainty estimates.
Accredited calibration
An accredited calibration is a traceable calibration performed within the lab’s ISO/IEC 17025 scope, where an accreditation body has independently assessed that the lab performs the measurement competently and reports uncertainty correctly. The certificate carries the accreditation symbol and the lab’s certificate number, and the result is defensible because a third party stands behind the lab’s competence.

When the difference bites
Aerospace primes (AS9100 flow-downs), medical-device makers (ISO 13485), and many regulated manufacturers require accredited calibration for equipment that verifies product. If you hand an auditor a non-accredited "traceable" certificate where an accredited one was required, expect a finding. The fix is simple: specify accredited calibration for the instruments that matter, and confirm the measurement is on the lab’s scope.
Common questions
Does accredited calibration cost more?
Often modestly, because it carries documented uncertainty and decision rules and the lab bears accreditation overhead. But it removes the audit argument entirely for equipment that verifies product — usually worth it.
