Gauge Block Calibration and Grades
Gauge blocks are the quiet reference behind a huge share of dimensional measurement. Understanding their grades and calibration tells you how far you can trust everything measured against them.

Grades and what they mean
Gauge blocks come in grades (under standards such as ASME B89.1.9 or ISO 3650) that define how tightly each block’s actual size may deviate from nominal — from high-grade calibration/reference blocks to working-grade sets used on the floor. Higher grades hold tighter tolerances and serve as references for calibrating lower-grade blocks and instruments.
How they are calibrated
Blocks are calibrated by comparison against higher-grade masters (or, at the top, by interferometry) in a temperature-controlled environment, with each block’s deviation from nominal reported along with uncertainty. Recalibrate a set when it reaches its interval, and pull individual blocks that show wear, scratches, or corrosion — a damaged block quietly corrupts everything checked against it.

How often should gauge blocks be recalibrated?
Reference and calibration-grade blocks are recalibrated on an interval based on usage and criticality; working blocks are checked for wear frequently and recalibrated per your program. Damaged blocks should be removed regardless of due date.
