Automated RF racks, not a technician with a source and a notepad
RF and microwave is where our electrical laboratory is built to stand out. We run dedicated RF racks driven by the Fluke MET/CAL automated calibration system with a current procedure subscription, so a spectrum analyzer is calibrated by the manufacturer’s procedure rather than by whatever subset of points a technician has time for. Every point in the procedure gets exercised, measurement uncertainty is computed at each one, and adjustment is performed at firmware level where the instrument supports it.
That matters more on an analyzer than on almost anything else in the rack. A spectrum analyzer has many interacting error contributors — amplitude accuracy, frequency response, reference level and attenuator switching, resolution bandwidth — and a manual spot check across three or four points can pass an instrument that is out of tolerance in the region you actually use.
Certificates that survive an aerospace or defense audit
Every certificate documents as-found and as-left readings, measurement uncertainty, NIST traceability, and the ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 decision rule with test uncertainty ratio, under A2LA ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation, certificate 4296.01.
As-found data is not a formality on RF equipment. When an analyzer returns out of tolerance, the first question from a quality system is which measurements are affected — and that question is answerable only if the certificate records the instrument’s condition on arrival rather than only after adjustment. Logistics for an instrument you would rather not ship
Analyzers are expensive, heavy, and awkward to crate. Our own drivers collect on free routes — Orange County Monday and Wednesday, Los Angeles County Tuesday and Thursday, the Inland Empire Friday — so the instrument stays in our custody from your bench to ours and back, with no third-party freight terminal in between. How often should a spectrum analyzer be calibrated?
Manufacturers typically specify 12 months, and most quality systems match that. Analyzers that travel, get used in the field, or sit in temperature-swinging environments often justify a shorter interval. Because we report as-found data on every certificate, your own drift history becomes the basis for that decision after a couple of cycles.
Which spectrum analyzer brands do you calibrate?
Keysight and Agilent, Rohde & Schwarz, Anritsu, Tektronix, and most others, using manufacturer procedures through MET/CAL where available. Tell us the model and we will confirm coverage before you send it.
Will you adjust an analyzer that comes back out of tolerance?
Where the instrument supports adjustment, yes — performed at firmware level, with both as-found and as-left readings documented on the certificate so the record shows what changed.
Can you calibrate our analyzer at our facility?
Yes. On-site RF calibration is available for equipment that should not leave the building. Book roughly two weeks ahead so we schedule the right technician and standards.
