Warehouse scales are the instrument everybody forgets

A distribution building is full of measurement equipment that nobody thinks of as measurement equipment. Floor scales at every dock door, pallet and bench scales in pack-out, checkweighers on outbound lines, and the thermometers and data loggers documenting any temperature-controlled zone. They get used every shift and calibrated approximately never, until a customer audit or a weights-and-measures question forces the issue.

Scale and balance calibration is the highest-volume request we get out of Chino. Our mass laboratory runs four Mettler comparators with MCLink software and ASTM and OIML Class 1 weights to 25 kg, in a room held to ±0.5 °C and ±5 %RH. For floor scales built into a dock or too large to move, on-site calibration at your facility is the practical answer — book roughly two weeks ahead so we schedule the right technician and weight cart.

Food processing keeps its own set of problems

Chino retained real food and beverage processing as the dairies gave way, and food plants generate instruments that fail differently than shop tools. Wash-down environments corrode. Thermal cycling drifts probes. Equipment that lives in a cook or chill step gets abused in ways a bench micrometer never does, which is why food-side instruments usually justify a shorter recall interval than the annual default.

Our temperature and humidity laboratory covers −196 to 1000 °C using Fluke metrology baths and furnaces, a Triple Point of Water maintenance bath, and reference SPRTs read by Fluke 1594A Super Thermometers with uncertainties as low as ±0.007 °C. Humidity runs 10 to 95 %RH on a Thunder Scientific two-pressure generator. Alongside that, pressure gauges on process skids and CIP systems, and timers on validated hold steps.

Chino Airport work is a torque discipline

General aviation maintenance and restoration around Chino Airport runs on documented fastener torque. Every value in a maintenance manual assumes the wrench that set it was in tolerance, and the only thing that proves it afterward is a calibration certificate carrying as-found data. As-left alone cannot answer the question that matters after a discrepancy: which work is affected.

We calibrate torque wrenches, torque screwdrivers, and multipliers from 0.5 ozf·in to 1,000 lbf·ft. Shops also send micrometers, bore gauges, thread gages, and pressure gauges off hydraulic and pneumatic systems, plus multimeters from avionics and electrical benches.

Metal fabrication and the shops in between

Between the warehouses and the airport sits a layer of metal fabrication, machining, and industrial service companies that has been in Chino since long before the logistics boom. Their instrument list is the classic one: calipers out to 60 inches, gage blocks, height gauges, indicators, pin and ring sets, and hardness testers at incoming inspection.

Dimensional was our founding discipline in 1968 and remains the largest volume through the door. We also repair dimensional instruments with parts stocked for Mitutoyo, Starrett, Interapid, and SPI, lap small granite surface plates to ±0.0001 in, and repair hardness testers in-house. Repair estimates never exceed 50% of the cost of new, and when a tool is not worth saving we say so rather than quoting around it.

The Friday route, and what the certificate carries

Chino is on our free Friday Inland Empire pickup and delivery route, about 20 miles from the lab. There is no pickup charge and no minimum order, which matters for a small shop sending eight tools as much as it does for a distribution center sending forty scales.

Everything we calibrate is calibrated at 1131 S Richfield Rd in Placentia — an 8,000 sq ft laboratory with discipline-specific environmentally controlled rooms, running since 1968 and past a million calibrations. Certificates document as-found and as-left readings, measurement uncertainty, NIST traceability, and the ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 decision rule with TUR, under A2LA ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation certificate 4296.01. Standard turnaround is 7–10 business days, with expedited 24, 48, and 72-hour service when something is holding a shipment or an aircraft.
