Research laboratories run on pipettes and temperature

A biomedical research operation of any size runs hundreds of air-displacement pipettes, and they are among the most frequently audited instruments in the building — because a pipette out of tolerance quietly corrupts every result it touched, and nothing about its appearance reveals the problem.

We calibrate pipettes to ISO 8655 using both gravimetric and photometric methods. Standard service is 2 channels at 4 volumes; accredited service is 3 channels at 10 volumes for labs that need the fuller uncertainty picture. Because a lab cannot surrender its entire pipette population at once, we stage batches so bench work continues while a portion is out.

Cold storage, incubators, and the range that covers them

Research and clinical environments are dense with temperature-critical equipment: ultra-low freezers, cryogenic storage, refrigerators, incubators, water baths, and autoclaves. Each carries sensors and loggers documenting conditions that sample integrity depends on, and each is in scope during a review.

Our temperature and humidity laboratory covers −196 to 1000 °C using Fluke metrology baths and furnaces, a Triple Point of Water maintenance bath, and liquid-nitrogen fixed-point work at the bottom of the range, with reference SPRTs read by Fluke 1594A Super Thermometers delivering uncertainties as low as ±0.007 °C. That span covers liquid nitrogen storage and autoclave verification from the same accredited scope, which is not true of every regional lab.

Balances, centrifuges, and the rest of the bench

Around the pipettes sits the rest of the laboratory inventory — analytical and microbalances, centrifuge tachometers, timers, and pressure gauges on autoclaves and gas systems. Our mass laboratory runs four Mettler comparators with MCLink software against ASTM and OIML Class 1 weights to 25 kg, in a room held to ±0.5 °C and ±5 %RH.

For validated equipment we also perform Kaye validation supporting IQ/OQ/PQ, and can support GMP staffing needs where a project requires additional qualified hands.

The industrial half of the city

Duarte light manufacturing and machining along Huntington Drive sends a completely different list: calipers, micrometers, gage blocks, thread gages, height gauges, indicators, and torque wrenches from assembly, plus multimeters and electrical test equipment from maintenance and engineering.

Both halves run through the same laboratory under one accreditation, which is the practical argument for consolidating. A company with a materials lab and a machine shop otherwise ends up with two calibration vendors and two recall calendars that nobody reconciles.

Route, turnaround, and the certificate

Duarte is on our free Tuesday and Thursday Los Angeles County route, about 28 miles from the lab. For equipment that cannot leave a controlled space, on-site calibration is available by appointment, booked roughly two weeks ahead, with after-hours scheduling where a laboratory cannot pause during working hours.

Certificates document as-found and as-left readings, measurement uncertainty, NIST traceability, and the ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 decision rule with TUR, under A2LA ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation certificate 4296.01, with a quality system compliant to ISO 10012 and applicable portions of AS9100, IATF 16949, ISO 13485, and FDA 21 CFR. Standard turnaround is 7–10 business days, with expedited 24, 48, and 72-hour options when a study or a release is waiting.

Interval setting deserves real attention in a research environment, because the default assumption is usually wrong in both directions. Pipettes in daily heavy use drift faster than an annual schedule catches, while a balance that sits on an isolation bench and gets used twice a month may be comfortably stable well past twelve months. Because every certificate records as-found condition, your own drift history builds up over a few cycles into something you can actually reason from rather than a manufacturer default. We will review that history with you and recommend intervals grounded in your data. For a laboratory running hundreds of instruments, tightening the ones that need it and relaxing the ones that do not is usually a net reduction in both cost and risk.

One last practical point about scheduling. Research and clinical operations rarely have a quiet week, so we would rather build a rotation than ask a laboratory to stand down. Tell us how your instruments are grouped by bench, project, or room, and we will stage collections so no single area is ever fully without equipment. For instruments that cannot leave a controlled space at all, on-site work handles them in place. Either way the goal is that calibration becomes a scheduled background activity rather than a disruption somebody has to negotiate around each time it comes due.
