Calibration Services in Glendale

Glendale's industrial spine runs along San Fernando Road and Air Way on the city's west side, and the street names explain themselves: Air Way, Grand Central Avenue, Flower Street. This was Grand Central Air Terminal, the field that had the first paved runway west of the Rockies. A high-reliability connector manufacturer, a repowering municipal generating station and Disney's ride-engineering campus all sit on that old airport grid, and all three live on measurement.

Four freeways, and the one that is not here

The SR-134, the Ventura Freeway, is Glendale's main line, running east to west with Glendale-labeled exits at San Fernando Road, Central and Brand Boulevards, Glendale Avenue and Harvey Drive. The SR-2, the Glendale Freeway, interchanges with it inside the city and runs north to the I-210 — and unlike the Route 2 segments inside the City of Los Angeles, which were relinquished and declared not to be state highways, the Glendale Freeway is still a state facility here. The I-5 runs along the west side through the San Fernando Road corridor, and the Western Avenue exit is the access for the Air Way and Flower Street industrial district.

The fourth one surprises people: the I-210 genuinely does pass through Glendale. Montrose and La Crescenta are part of the city, sitting north of the Verdugo Mountains and physically separated from the main body, which is why Caltrans carries Glendale labels at the Lowell Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue, La Crescenta Avenue and Ocean View Boulevard exits. It is a real corridor — just describe it as serving Montrose and La Crescenta, not downtown Glendale.

What is not here is the SR-170. The Hollywood Freeway runs entirely inside the City of Los Angeles, from the Hollywood Split in North Hollywood north to the I-5 in Sun Valley, and its junction with the 134 is at the far west end of that freeway, several miles outside Glendale. The US-101 does not enter the city either. And Glendale has no airport: Hollywood Burbank Airport is in Burbank, governed by the three-city Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority — a genuinely useful fact, and not the same thing as an airport in Glendale. Grand Central Air Terminal closed in 1959. One more: the municipal utility is Glendale Water & Power, not LADWP.

Glenair on Air Way is the best instrument story in the city

Glenair at 1211 Air Way manufactures high-reliability connectors, connector backshells, accessories and interconnect cable assemblies for mission-critical land, sea, air and space applications, and holds AS9100D and ISO 9001:2015. It also holds a Nadcap accreditation for electronics cable and harness assemblies — at its Anaheim facility, which is fifteen minutes from our lab, so we will state that accurately rather than relocate it. Connector manufacturing is one of the most gage-intensive operations there is, because almost every feature is a thread or a fit.

That means high-volume, high-recurrence thread ring and plug gage work on shells and coupling nuts, plus gage blocks, pin gages, micrometers, calipers, height, bore and depth gages, optical comparators and coordinate measuring machine verification. On the electrical side: multimeters, megohmmeters and hipot and insulation-resistance testers, milliohm and low-resistance meters, oscilloscopes, and network and spectrum analyzers for shielded-cable and EMI performance.

Then the disciplines that separate a connector house from a generic machine shop. Torque wrenches, torque screwdrivers and torque transducers for coupling-nut and backshell torque, and pull-test frames and load cells for crimp and cable pull-off verification — crimp pull testing is a staple of cable-and-harness process audits. Pressure gauges and transducers for hermeticity and leak testing of sealed connectors. Environmental, humidity and thermal-shock chambers with data loggers. Accelerometers and shakers for connector qualification. Balances and ASTM test weights for plating, potting and adhesive batching, and mass flow controllers on plating lines and inert-gas purge. Under AS9100, what the auditor actually reads is the certificate — and ours states as-found and as-left values, uncertainty, documented traceability and the Z540.3 decision rule with TUR.

The entertainment cluster is an engineering cluster

Walt Disney Imagineering works out of the Grand Central Creative Campus, on the site of the old air terminal — Disney restored the 1928 terminal building at 1310 Air Way between 2012 and 2014, and the former runway is now Grand Central Avenue, a public street. The planned relocation to Florida was announced in 2021 and cancelled in 2023; Imagineering stays in Glendale. This matters to a calibration lab because Imagineering holds hundreds of patents on ride systems and show effects, which means machine shops, prototype fabrication and proof-load testing, not just storyboards.

A ride-engineering campus has an unusual instrument profile. Torque wrenches and transducers for ride-vehicle and show-action fastening, and load cells and tensile frames for proof-loading lift and restraint hardware — safety-critical work where the number has to be documented. Accelerometers for ride-motion and show-action characterization. Hydraulic and pneumatic pressure gauges, transducers and transmitters on animatronics and ride actuation. Calipers, micrometers, height gages and gage blocks with laser trackers in the model and machine shops. Scales for ride-vehicle and ballast weighing, thermocouples and RTDs on motor and hydraulic testing, and flow meters and rotameters on pneumatic and special-effects systems.

DreamWorks Animation occupies the seven-building campus at 1000 Flower Street under a lease running to 2035 — worth naming correctly, since the campus itself has changed owners more than once and DreamWorks is the tenant. It is a light instrument load compared with Imagineering, and we would rather say so than pad a page.

Grayson, three hospitals, and the shops on San Fernando Road

Glendale Water & Power runs the Grayson Power Plant at 800 Air Way, on the same street as Glenair. Grayson is being repowered with three Wärtsilä reciprocating engines plus a battery energy storage system sized up to 75 MW and 300 MWh, with the 2003 simple-cycle peaker retained; the project's published completion dates are tentative, so we will not claim what is or is not yet commercial. What is certain is the instrument profile. Reciprocating prime movers are vibration-intensive, so accelerometers and proximity probes are a recurring need, not a one-off. Add pressure gauges, transducers and deadweight testers across gas, lube-oil, cooling-water and compressed-air circuits and relief-valve set-pressure verification.

Then thermocouples and RTDs on jacket water, exhaust and generator windings; fuel-gas flow meters tied to greenhouse-gas reporting and emissions-monitoring sample-train flow; cylinder-head, connecting-rod and generator bolting torque; and a heavy electrical load — multimeters, clamp meters, insulation and hipot sets, protective-relay test sets and power-quality analyzers, which only grows with a utility-scale battery on site. The plant machine shop carries the usual micrometers, calipers, bore gages and dial indicators.

Glendale also has three acute-care hospitals in one city, which is unusual: Adventist Health Glendale at 1509 Wilson Terrace — renamed from Glendale Adventist Medical Center, and a 515-bed facility with its own West Tower clinical lab; Dignity Health's Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center at 1420 S Central Ave; and USC Verdugo Hills Hospital at 1812 Verdugo Blvd. Three clinical labs and three biomedical departments mean pipettes at the top of the recurrence list, then analytical balances and ASTM class weights, patient and specimen scales, blood-bank and pharmacy refrigerator and freezer monitoring with data loggers, autoclave temperature and pressure verification, sphygmomanometer and manometer references, medical-gas regulators and oxygen flow meters, anesthesia machine flow verification, electrical-safety and defibrillator analyzers, and torque drivers in biomed and orthopedic instrument service. Out on San Fernando Road, Accurate Manufacturing Co. at 6641 San Fernando Rd builds precision die sets, mold bases and ground plate with CNC machining, Blanchard grinding and turning — a classic gage-room account where bore gages and gage pins control bushing and guide-post fits, and where ambient temperature in the gage room is itself a measurement problem.

What we will not claim about Glendale

Nestlé USA is the big one. It moved its United States headquarters from Glendale to Arlington, Virginia, announced in January 2018 — the City of Glendale posted the news itself — and the former building on North Brand Boulevard is leased to other tenants. Any page listing Nestlé as a Glendale employer is eight years out of date. Dine Brands, the IHOP and Applebee's parent, moved the other way: out of Glendale and into Pasadena in 2023, so it belongs on our Pasadena page, not this one. Avery Dennison, once at Goode Avenue, is headquartered in Mentor, Ohio and lists no Glendale location at all.

We also will not claim an FAA Part 145 repair station in Glendale. There is one candidate in a third-party aviation directory and we could not confirm it, and the airport-adjacent repair work in this area is at Hollywood Burbank, which is in Burbank. No ISO 13485 device manufacturer, no automotive tier supplier under IATF 16949 and no food manufacturer was verified inside the city, so none of those regimes appear here. Accurate Manufacturing publishes no quality certification, so we do not assign it one. Glendale's industrial roster below Glenair is genuinely thinner than its reputation suggests — mostly small shops, fabricators and distributors along San Fernando Road — and describing it accurately is more useful to a quality manager than inflating it.

The lab is about 38 miles away, 45 to 60 minutes via the 57, the 210 and the 134, with the west-side industrial core a few minutes further than downtown. Glendale is on our free Tuesday and Thursday Los Angeles County route. Expedited turnaround at 24, 48 and 72 hours is available, and on-site calibration covers instruments that should not leave the floor. All nine disciplines run in discipline-specific, environmentally controlled rooms under one roof — dimensional, electrical and RF, temperature and humidity, pressure, mass, pipettes, force and torque, gas flow and vibration — so a connector shop, a power plant and a hospital lab can each move an entire instrument population on one pickup. American Gage has calibrated from inside Orange County since 1968, under current ownership since 1998, with over a million calibrations performed, holding ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation from A2LA under certificate 4296.01. Standard turnaround is 7–10 business days.
