Calibration Services in Pasadena
Pasadena holds the densest concentration of research-grade measurement instrumentation in the San Gabriel Valley — Caltech, a federally funded space laboratory next door, a bioscience corridor on South Fair Oaks, a municipal power plant the city generates its own electricity in, and a named industrial district out on East Foothill. That is a very different instrument population from a machine-shop town, and it needs a calibration supplier that can write a certificate a federal auditor will accept.

Three freeways, and the one everybody gets wrong
Pasadena has three real state facilities inside its limits. The I-210, the Foothill Freeway, runs east to west across the city and carries Pasadena-labeled exits at Arroyo Boulevard, Lincoln Avenue, Seco Street and Fair Oaks Avenue. The SR-134, the Ventura Freeway, has its eastern terminus right here at the I-210 interchange, with Pasadena exits at Linda Vista, San Rafael and Orange Grove. And the SR-110 — the Arroyo Seco Parkway, the oldest freeway in the West — genuinely does reach the city: its legislative northern terminus is Glenarm Street in Pasadena. Our Tuesday and Thursday route comes in on the 57 and the 210.
Then there is the 710, which is where most location pages for this city fall apart. The extension is dead. Senate Bill 7 authorized relinquishment in 2019, the freeway-and-expressway endpoints moved to California Boulevard in Pasadena effective January 2024, and the northern stub itself went back to the City — the California Transportation Commission approved it in June 2022 and Caltrans transferred the right-of-way, four overcrossings and nine traffic signals on 15 August 2022. There is no 710 corridor serving Pasadena, and a plant manager here knows that story cold.
Two more that catch people out. Rosemead Boulevard still wears a "19" shield in places, but legal Route 19 ends at Gardendale Street down in Bellflower; the Pasadena segment is legally Route 164 and was relinquished in October 2006. Arroyo Parkway is not the 110 either — the Glenarm-to-Colorado stretch was relinquished to the City in 2000 and barred from re-adoption in 2003. The SR-2 never enters Pasadena at all; its nearest point is the I-210 junction over in La Cañada Flintridge. We mention this because getting the roads right is the cheapest possible proof that somebody actually read about the city.
Caltech, and the laboratory with two addresses
The California Institute of Technology at 1200 E California Blvd is the anchor of the city's measurement economy, and it manages NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. JPL is worth being precise about: its mailing address is Pasadena 91109, but the physical street address at 4800 Oak Grove Drive is in La Cañada Flintridge. We say so rather than claiming the lab, because the practical point stands either way — Pasadena sits at the center of a federally funded research supplier base, and federal contract flowdowns require documented control of monitoring and measuring equipment with recorded uncertainties and traceability to national standards.
The instrument list that comes out of campus and spacecraft work covers almost everything we do. Micrometers, calipers, gage blocks, height and bore gages, pin and thread gages and granite surface plates in the machine and fabrication shops. DMMs, oscilloscopes, DC power supplies, spectrum and network analyzers and signal generators across electrical and RF test. Thermocouples, RTDs, cryogenic sensors, thermal-vacuum and environmental chambers and data loggers. Vacuum gauges, transducers, transmitters and deadweight testers on the pressure side.
Then the three disciplines that make spacecraft work distinctive: mass flow controllers and rotameters on propulsion, cryogenics and gas-handling benches; accelerometers and shaker systems for qualification and modal survey; and torque wrenches, torque screwdrivers and transducers for flight-hardware fastening, where the torque value is part of the as-built record. Add analytical balances and ASTM weight sets and pipettes in the biology, geochemistry and astrobiology labs and you have an account that touches all nine of our disciplines.
South Fair Oaks: the bioscience corridor
South Fair Oaks Avenue is Pasadena's medical and bioscience spine. Huntington Medical Research Institutes sits at 686 S Fair Oaks Ave, running cardiovascular and neuroscience programs with analytical biochemistry, imaging and a central biorepository as core resources. Up at 465 N Halstead Street, Suite 200, Xencor engineers therapeutic proteins in purpose-built laboratory space. Both are pipette-heavy, balance-heavy, freezer-heavy operations — exactly the recurring work our clinical and life-science bench was built for.
For a research institute, the highest-recurrence items are single and multichannel pipettes verified gravimetrically, analytical balances with ASTM class weight sets, and continuous monitoring of CO₂ incubators, refrigerators and ultra-low freezers with calibrated probes and data loggers. Add centrifuge tachometry and timer verification, pressure transducers on physiological rigs, chromatography system pressure measurement, and gas regulators and flow meters on incubator and instrument supply lines. Preclinical research carries its own regime — FDA good laboratory practice and animal-care accreditation both ask what the calibration records look like.
The city's hospital is Huntington Health, an affiliate of Cedars-Sinai. The name matters: it was Huntington Hospital and before that Huntington Memorial Hospital, and the affiliation and rename were announced in May 2022. Any supplier directory still using the old name is four years stale. Clinical calibration runs as a discipline of its own here — pipettes, autoclave and sterilizer temperature and pressure validation with thermocouple mapping, sphygmomanometers, pharmacy and specimen balances, blood-bank and medication refrigerator monitoring, defibrillator and electrical-safety analyzers, infusion-pump flow verification, and medical-gas regulators and flow meters.
East Foothill, Walnut Street and the city's own power plant
Pasadena has a real, named industrial district, which is more than most cities on this side of the county can say. The East Foothill Industrial District is District d1 of the East Pasadena Specific Plan, and the adjacent district explicitly protects existing industrial uses and allows an environmental park for research and development, light manufacturing and engineering laboratories. Tetra Tech is headquartered in the corridor at 3475 E Foothill Blvd, which puts a lot of field-portable instrumentation on that street: pressure transducers and transmitters, flow meters and rotameters for stack and water sampling, thermohygrometers, data loggers and torque tools on sampling and monitoring-well hardware.
Around it sits the city's genuine light-manufacturing layer. Audio Engineering Associates builds ribbon microphones at 1029 N Allen Ave — dimensional gage work on ribbon and transformer assembly, audio analyzers and signal generators on the bench, balances for ribbon foil, and humidity control in the magnet-handling area. Merit Aerospace at 3425 Huntington Dr stocks aerospace fasteners, tooling, hydraulic fittings and materials under ISO 9001 and AS9120 — the aerospace distributor standard, not AS9100, and we write it the way their certificate reads. A stockist's gage room lives on thread ring and plug gages, go/no-go pin gages, micrometers, hardness reference blocks and torque wrenches and transducers for lot verification. ArtCenter College of Design adds model and fabrication shops on Lida Street, South Raymond Avenue and South Arroyo Parkway.
And Pasadena generates its own electricity. Pasadena Water & Power runs the Glenarm and Broadway complex on about fourteen acres at the north end of the Arroyo Seco Parkway, split by the Metro A Line tracks, with a combined-cycle gas turbine added in 2016 and a battery storage project in the pipeline. A municipal generating station is one of the most calibration-intensive assets a city can contain: pressure gauges, transducers and deadweight testers across gas, lube-oil and cooling circuits, thermocouples and RTDs through the turbine island, fuel and emissions-monitoring gas flow, accelerometers and proximity probes on the rotating train, turbine bolting torque, and multimeters, clamp meters, insulation and relay test sets on the electrical side. Air-district permits and state greenhouse-gas reporting are what make those calibrations recurring rather than optional.
What we will not claim about Pasadena
Four companies that directories still place in Pasadena are not here. Parsons moved its headquarters to Northern Virginia in 2019. Jacobs Engineering became Jacobs Solutions and moved to Dallas. Green Dot announced a move to Austin in 2021. Avery Dennison left Pasadena, then left California, and is now headquartered in Mentor, Ohio. Arrowhead Pharmaceuticals is genuinely at 177 E Colorado Blvd, but Pasadena is corporate headquarters — its research is in San Diego and Madison and its manufacturing is in Verona, Wisconsin, so we do not describe Pasadena as a pharmaceutical manufacturing town. Dine Brands, on the other hand, really did arrive, moving from Glendale to 10 West Walnut Street in 2023.
We also found no AS9100-certified manufacturer inside Pasadena city limits and no confirmed operating FAA Part 145 repair station, so this page claims neither. We serve AS9100 suppliers across the San Gabriel Valley, and we say it that way. Pasadena has no refinery, no port and no military base. Being straight about the shape of a city's instrument base is the point: the work here is research, clinical, utility and light-industrial, and that is a perfectly good book of business to be honest about.
The lab is about 35 miles away, 40 to 55 minutes up the 57 and the 210, on a free pickup and delivery route that runs every Tuesday and Thursday. At that distance expedited turnaround at 24, 48 and 72 hours is genuinely achievable, and on-site calibration covers anything that should not be moved. All nine disciplines run under one roof — dimensional, electrical and RF, temperature and humidity, pressure, mass, pipettes, force and torque, gas flow and vibration. American Gage has calibrated from inside Orange County since 1968, under current ownership since 1998, with more than a million calibrations performed in an 8,000 sq ft facility. Every certificate carries as-found and as-left data, measurement uncertainty, NIST traceability and the ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 decision rule with TUR, under ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation from A2LA, certificate 4296.01. Standard turnaround is 7–10 business days.

Pasadena calibration FAQs
How far is your lab from Pasadena?
About 35 miles — roughly 40 to 55 minutes to 1131 S Richfield Rd in Placentia, via SR-57 north and the I-210 west. Pasadena is on our free Tuesday and Thursday Los Angeles County pickup route, so most customers never make the drive.
Can you support federal research contract calibration requirements?
Yes. We are accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 by A2LA under certificate 4296.01, and every certificate documents as-found and as-left values, measurement uncertainty, NIST traceability and an explicit ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 decision rule with TUR — the evidence package federal monitoring and measuring equipment flowdowns ask for.
Do you calibrate pipettes and laboratory instruments for Pasadena research labs?
Yes, and we run it in house rather than subcontracting it. Single and multichannel pipettes verified gravimetrically, analytical and precision balances with ASTM and OIML weight sets, incubator, refrigerator and freezer probes and data loggers, centrifuge tachometry and timer verification, and chamber temperature mapping.
Do you handle vibration and environmental test instrumentation?
Yes. Accelerometers and shaker systems, thermocouples and RTDs, environmental and thermal chambers, vacuum and pressure transducers, and mass flow controllers — the qualification-test instrument set that space and research hardware work depends on.
