Calibration Services in Long Beach

Long Beach may have the widest instrument spread of any city in Southern California. Container cranes on Pier T, rocket stages on Wardlow Road, custody-transfer meters on four man-made oil islands and pipettes in a Level II trauma center all sit inside one set of city limits — and every one of them needs measurement data someone can defend.

The port is a measurement operation with ships attached

The Port of Long Beach covers roughly 4,600 harbor acres across twelve piers and eighty berths, moved more than 9.7 million TEU in 2024, and handled about two thousand vessel arrivals. Behind the container terminals — Total Terminals International at Pier T, Long Beach Container Terminal at Middle Harbor, International Transportation Service at Pier G, Pacific Container Terminal at Pier J and SSA Marine at Pier A — sits a population of instruments that is regulated harder than almost anything else we calibrate.

29 CFR 1917.50 is the reason. Shore-based cranes and derricks have to be tested as a unit quadrennially and examined annually, certified by a person or agency accredited under Part 1919. Proof loads are prescribed: plus 25 percent up to twenty short tons, plus five tons from twenty to fifty, plus ten percent above that. Gear out of service six months past due needs full re-certification including a unit proof load test. That work runs on certified test weights, load cells, dynamometers, tension links, crane scales and load-moment indicators — all of which need their own traceable calibration before they can certify anything.

Alongside it: truck and weighbridge scales sealed by the county, SOLAS verified-gross-mass weighing systems, spreader and loose-gear proof-load equipment, torque wrenches and multipliers for crane and chassis work, fixed and portable gas detection for bunkering and liquid-bulk confined spaces, reefer temperature loggers, and megohmmeters and multimeters for shore-power maintenance.

Space Beach runs on dimensional and pressure metrology

Relativity Space occupies the former Boeing C-17 plant on East Wardlow Road — a 1.1 million square foot hangar on 93 acres, with large-format 3D printing, a metallurgical lab, a machine shop and mission control on site. Rocket Lab runs its Engine Development Center at 4022 East Conant Street, the old Virgin Orbit building it bought out of the 2023 auction, for Rutherford production and Archimedes development. Vast built a roughly 189,000 square foot campus near the airport and welds Haven-1’s primary structure in house. JetZero took 275,000 square feet at Long Beach Airport in January 2024 and is engineering a full-scale blended-wing-body demonstrator under a $235 million Air Force contract. SpaceX recovers Falcon boosters on fifteen-plus acres along Nimitz Road at Pier T.

Launch hardware does not tolerate approximate measurement. Gage blocks, ring, plug, thread and pin gages, micrometers, calipers, bore gages, height gages and indicators carry the dimensional load; granite surface plates get flatness and repeat-reading certification; CMM, laser tracker and scanner-arm artifacts verify the large-volume systems. Then the physical disciplines: pressure transducers, digital test gauges, deadweight testers and vacuum gauges; helium mass-spectrometer leak detectors and calibrated leak standards; load cells and force frames for structural qualification; thermocouples, RTDs and furnace surveys where AMS 2750 pyrometry applies; hardness testers and certified test blocks.

Rubbercraft on Conant Street makes the elastomeric and composite side of that supply chain — aerodynamic, cockpit, EMI, inflatable and fire seals, AS9100 and ITAR-registered. Being 23 miles away and US-staffed matters when the article being calibrated is export-controlled.

Oil, and the city’s own measurement obligations

Long Beach produces around 22,238 barrels of oil equivalent per day from roughly 2,700 active and idle wells, about 1,500 of them tied to the four man-made THUMS islands built in 1964. California Resources Corporation is Field Contractor for the Long Beach Unit with THUMS as its agent; Tidelands Oil Production Company holds West Wilmington. Oil and gas generated about $56.5 million for the City in 2023, and the City is working to fully fund its share of Wilmington abandonment liability by 2035.

Production metrology is custody-transfer metrology: turbine and Coriolis meter proving, prover tanks, temperature and pressure compensation, tank gauging and strapping. Add relief-valve set-pressure testing, pressure gauges and transmitters, deadweight testers, hydrogen-sulfide and multi-gas detection with bump-test and span verification, torque tools for wellhead and flange work, crane and workover-rig load cells, subsidence survey instrumentation, and the vibration analyzers and loop calibrators that keep rotating equipment honest.

One accuracy note, because local readers would catch it: there is no petroleum refinery inside Long Beach city limits. The refining corridor is Wilmington and Carson, across the 710. What Long Beach has is liquid-bulk and petroleum marine terminals, tank farms and petroleum-coke export. We serve the refinery corridor next door — relief-valve benches, fenceline and process analyzers under South Coast AQMD Rule 1180, loading-rack provers — but we will not pretend it is in your city.

Hospitals, campuses and the airport

MemorialCare Long Beach Medical Center is a 420-bed Level II trauma center with Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital on the same campus; Dignity Health – St. Mary Medical Center and the Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center round out the acute-care picture. Clinical calibration is its own discipline and we run it in house: single and multi-channel pipettes verified gravimetrically, centrifuge tachometry and timers, autoclave and sterilizer thermal mapping, sphygmomanometers and NIBP modules, analytical balances and weight sets, blood-bank and pharmacy monitoring probes and loggers, defibrillator and electrical-safety analyzers, infusion-pump flow verification, and medical-gas flow meters.

Long Beach Airport sits on 1,166 acres and recorded 389,532 aircraft operations in 2024, with the Long Beach Airport Association reporting more than 200 businesses and 18,000 employees on the field between Signature Aviation, Atlantic Aviation, the flight schools and the repair stations. Repair-station work is the most calibration-disciplined maintenance there is: under 14 CFR 145.109(b) every piece of inspection and test equipment used to make an airworthiness determination must be calibrated against a standard acceptable to the Administrator, with records. Torque wrenches dominate the volume; pitot-static and air-data test sets, altimeter and transponder equipment, bore gages and bonding testers follow.

What a Tuesday or Thursday pickup actually gets you

Long Beach is on our free Tuesday and Thursday Los Angeles County route, about 23 miles from the lab — SR-91 west to the 710, the 605 or the 405 depending on where in the city you sit. At that distance expedited calibration at 24, 48 and 72 hours is real rather than theoretical, because nothing is lost to freight at either end, and on-site calibration is straightforward to schedule for equipment that should not travel: surface plates, chambers, production test stands, crane load-test gear.

Worth knowing about the weights-and-measures split, because it trips up multi-site companies: Long Beach devices fall to the Los Angeles County Agricultural Commissioner / Weights and Measures Bureau, whose metrology lab holds NIST Echelon III accreditation. The County registers, tests and seals the commercial trade device. We calibrate the working standards, test weights, gages and instruments behind it — the ones the County’s scope never touches and your auditor always asks about.

American Gage has calibrated from inside Orange County since 1968, under current ownership since 1998, from an 8,000 sq ft facility that has performed more than a million calibrations across nine disciplines. Every certificate documents as-found and as-left values, measurement uncertainty, NIST traceability and the ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 decision rule with TUR, under ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation from A2LA, certificate 4296.01. Standard turnaround is 7–10 business days.

Long Beach calibration FAQs

How far is your lab from Long Beach?

About 23 miles — roughly 25 to 40 minutes to 1131 S Richfield Rd in Placentia depending on which part of the city you are in and the traffic. Long Beach is on our free Tuesday and Thursday Los Angeles County pickup route.

Can you support crane and lifting-gear certification at the port?

We calibrate the measurement equipment that certification depends on — certified test weights, load cells, dynamometers, tension links, crane scales, load-moment indicators and torque tools. The quadrennial unit test and annual examination under 29 CFR 1917.50 itself has to be certified by a Part 1919 accredited agency.

Do you handle export-controlled aerospace instruments?

Yes. We are a US laboratory with US technicians 23 miles from the Long Beach aerospace corridor, which avoids the export-control complications that come with shipping ITAR-controlled articles to an out-of-state or offshore lab.

Is the county seal on our scales the same as calibration?

No, and the distinction matters in an audit. The Los Angeles County Weights and Measures Bureau registers, tests and seals devices used commercially in trade. Our accredited calibration covers the working standards, test weights and instruments behind those devices, with uncertainty and traceability stated on the certificate.
