Calibration Services in Lakewood
Lakewood tells the truth about itself, so we will too. The City’s own financial report describes it as predominantly residential, with only six percent of its land zoned commercial and the city essentially built out by the late 1990s. What that leaves is a real but compact instrument population — one AS9100D aerospace shop, a UCI Health hospital, and a dense layer of fleet, retail and mechanical-trade measurement one exit from the Long Beach airport corridor.

One freeway, and knowing which one it is
Lakewood has exactly one freeway inside its limits: the I-605, running up the city’s eastern side, with the Carson Street and Lincoln Avenue exit sitting on the Long Beach–Lakewood line and the Del Amo Boulevard exit on the Lakewood–Cerritos line. That is the corridor our route runs. Lakewood Boulevard carries the city’s name and runs its full length, but Caltrans relinquished the Lakewood segment on April 9, 2012 — it is a city arterial now, not State Route 19, and writing otherwise is a tell that a page was assembled from an old map index.
The 91 is about two miles north via the 605, and its nearest exits are labeled Bellflower, not Lakewood. The 405 is about two miles south, reached by Lakewood or Bellflower Boulevard. Neither freeway enters the city. We say that plainly because a Lakewood plant manager knows it, and because the practical answer is the same either way: the city sits between the 605 and the airport corridor, so it is on our Tuesday and Thursday Los Angeles County route regardless.
Geography worth having: 9.45 square miles and 82,496 residents as of 2020, bordered by Long Beach on three sides, Bellflower to the north, Cerritos to the northeast, Cypress to the east and Hawaiian Gardens to the southeast. Built from scratch beginning in 1950 — about 17,500 houses in under three years — and incorporated in 1954 as the nation’s first contract city, a model it still runs on.
TFC Manufacturing is the proof the city has real aerospace work
TFC Manufacturing on Watson Plaza Drive is an AS9100D-certified precision aerospace manufacturer building flight-critical parts: three- to five-axis CNC milling and turning in aluminum, titanium and Inconel, plus laser cutting, forming, welding, PEM insertion, CMM inspection, first article to AS9102, and PPAP. That is a complete, demanding instrument population inside a city most calibration vendors write off as residential.
Shops like it live on dimensional metrology. CMM performance verification with ball bars, step gages and reference spheres; gage blocks, pin, plug, thread and ring gages; micrometers in every configuration, calipers, bore gages, height gages, dial and test indicators; granite surface plates with flatness certification and resurfacing when they need it; squares, parallels, sine bars and angle blocks. Then torque wrenches and screwdrivers, hardness testers with certified blocks, surface-roughness and optical comparator verification, machine-tool geometry checks, ultrasonic and coating-thickness gauges, and hydraulic pressure gauges on the presses.
Under AS9100, what the auditor actually reads is the certificate. Each of ours states as-found and as-left values, measurement uncertainty, documented NIST traceability and an explicit ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 decision rule with TUR. Beyond TFC, Lakewood’s industrial base is genuinely small-shop — machine shops, sheet metal fabricators, mechanical contractors. We will describe the category honestly rather than invent names for it.
UCI Health – Lakewood, under its current name
The hospital on East South Street is UCI Health – Lakewood. It spent decades as Lakewood Regional Medical Center and was part of Tenet’s Pacific Coast Network until UCI Health agreed to buy the four-hospital network in February 2024 and took over management and branding that March. Any supplier record or directory still calling it a Tenet hospital is two and a half years stale — and the transition brought University of California academic-health-center quality expectations with it.
Clinical calibration is a distinct discipline and we run all of it in house. Pipettes, single and multi-channel, verified gravimetrically. Centrifuge tachometry and timer verification. Autoclave and sterilizer temperature and pressure validation with thermocouple mapping. Sphygmomanometers, aneroid and electronic. Analytical and precision balances with ASTM and OIML weight sets. Laboratory, pharmacy, blood-bank, incubator, refrigerator and freezer thermometers, probes and data loggers. Defibrillator, electrical-safety and infusion-pump analyzers, patient simulators, medical-gas flow meters and regulators, radiation survey meters.
There is a local footnote we like: the same UCI Health network includes Placentia-Linda Hospital, which is about a mile and a half from our lab. We know this system’s paperwork because we work around the corner from one of its hospitals.
The measurement nobody labels as measurement
Lakewood’s working economy is retail, automotive, home improvement and the public sector. The City reports more than 4,000 businesses generating about $17.2 million in sales tax in FY 2024-25, with the top twenty-five retailers alone producing 57 percent of its Bradley-Burns revenue. Lakewood Center — roughly two million square feet on nearly 150 acres, open since 1951, anchored by Costco, Target, Macy’s and Best Buy and now headed for mixed-use redevelopment — sits at the middle of it.
All of that runs on devices. Retail, deli and butcher scales, shipping and postal scales, price scanners, fuel dispensers and LPG meters, and utility submeters in multifamily and mobile-home settings are registered and sealed by the Los Angeles County Agricultural Commissioner / Weights and Measures Bureau. Fleet and automotive service shops carry torque wrenches for lug nuts, suspension and driveline, tire gauges, alignment equipment, brake and dynamometer load verification, refrigerant scales, multimeters and battery testers, plus the emissions analyzers that BAR Smog Check stations have to keep certified.
The mechanical trades are the same story in different clothes: manifold and micron gauges, digital thermometers and psychrometers, anemometers and airflow hoods, manometers, combustion analyzers, clamp meters and insulation testers. Municipal and school-district shops add torque tools, pressure gauges, sound-level meters and confined-space gas detection. None of it is exotic. All of it produces numbers somebody acts on.
Twenty miles, and what we will not claim
Lakewood has no refinery, no port, no military base and no Part 145 repair station. A location page that implies otherwise does not survive a read by anyone who works there, and we would rather be the vendor that got it right. What the city does have is a short, honest drive — about 20 miles up the 605 from Placentia, 25 to 35 minutes — on a free pickup and delivery route that runs every Tuesday and Thursday.
At that distance, expedited turnaround at 24, 48 and 72 hours is genuinely achievable, and on-site calibration works for anything that should not be moved. All nine disciplines run under one roof — dimensional, electrical and RF, temperature and humidity, pressure, mass, pipettes, force and torque, gas flow and vibration — so a company with shop gages, a service fleet and a scale out front moves its whole instrument population on one pickup and one account.
American Gage has calibrated from inside Orange County since 1968, under current ownership since 1998, with more than a million calibrations performed in an 8,000 sq ft facility. Every certificate carries as-found and as-left data, measurement uncertainty, NIST traceability and the Z540.3 decision rule with TUR, under ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation from A2LA, certificate 4296.01. Standard turnaround is 7–10 business days.

Lakewood calibration FAQs
How far is your lab from Lakewood?
About 20 miles — roughly 25 to 35 minutes to 1131 S Richfield Rd in Placentia, via SR-91 west and the I-605 south. Lakewood is on our free Tuesday and Thursday Los Angeles County pickup route, so most customers never make the drive.
Do you serve AS9100 machine shops in Lakewood?
Yes. Dimensional metrology is our founding discipline — gage blocks, pin and thread gages, micrometers, calipers, bore and height gages, indicators, surface plates and CMM artifacts — with certificates written for AS9100 monitoring and measuring resource control.
Can you calibrate our retail or shipping scales?
We calibrate scales and balances and provide accredited certificates with uncertainty and traceability. Note that devices used commercially in trade are separately registered, tested and sealed by the Los Angeles County Weights and Measures Bureau — the two are complementary, not interchangeable.
Do you handle hospital and clinical instruments?
Yes — pipettes, centrifuges, autoclave and sterilizer verification, sphygmomanometers, balances and weight sets, refrigerator, freezer and incubator monitoring, defibrillator and electrical-safety analyzers, and infusion-pump flow verification.
