Calibration Services in Palmdale
Palmdale is the most specialized calibration market in Los Angeles County. Air Force Plant 42 sits in the middle of the city, a new B-21 final assembly line is going up on it, and the City is actively paying aerospace suppliers to relocate here. Every one of them arrives needing torque, pressure, dimensional, RF and pyrometry work under an accredited certificate. We are ninety miles south, and we would rather be straight about that than pretend otherwise.

Ninety miles up the 57, the 210 and the 14
Most Orange County drivers reach Palmdale on the SR-57 north to the I-210 west to the SR-14 north, about eighty-seven miles. The alternative, SR-91 west to I-5 north to SR-14 over the Newhall Pass, runs about ninety-three. Either way it is a ninety-minute to two-hour run, and longer in commute traffic or weather over the pass. A Palmdale plant manager drives this corridor and knows what it takes. The distance is also the point: at ninety miles the answer is a scheduled pickup, consolidated shipments, expedited turnaround or on-site calibration, not a drop-in.
The SR-14, the Antelope Valley Freeway, is the city freeway, and the Palmdale interchanges are Avenue S, Palmdale Boulevard, Rancho Vista Boulevard, 10th Street West, Avenue N and Avenue M. Two of those carry second names worth knowing: Avenue M is Columbia Way and Avenue N is R. Lee Ermey Avenue, while Rancho Vista Boulevard is the former Avenue P, which is why the City still titles its own grade-crossing project after both names. The lettered-avenue and numbered-street grid is protected by Los Angeles County policy as the Antelope Valley Street Naming Plan rather than being converted to the county default, which is a small thing that tells you how old the valley street network is.
The route designations are where most pages for this city fall apart. SR-138 is concurrent with SR-14 for roughly fourteen miles, from Avenue D in Lancaster down to Palmdale Boulevard, then it leaves the freeway and heads east as Palmdale Boulevard, 47th Street East and Fort Tejon Road before narrowing into Pearblossom Highway out through Littlerock and Pearblossom. So Pearblossom Highway is what SR-138 becomes east of town, not what it is inside town. Assembly Bill 2082 authorized the Transportation Commission to relinquish Route 138 inside Palmdale to the city, so we write it as currently signed SR-138 rather than as permanent. Two more: the I-5 does not come near Palmdale, with about thirty-nine miles of mountain between here and the Newhall Pass interchange; and SR-18 does not reach Palmdale either, since its western terminus is at SR-138 in Llano, roughly twenty miles east. Sierra Highway, which City Hall is addressed on, is the historic US-6 and pre-freeway SR-14 alignment and is a city arterial today; the only surviving state-maintained Route 14U segment is down in Santa Clarita.
Air Force Plant 42, and what is actually being built on it
Plant 42 is a government-owned, contractor-operated aerospace manufacturing and flight-test facility, and it has been one since 1954. Its boundaries run north of Avenue P, south of Columbia Way, west of Sierra Highway and east toward 40th and 50th Street East. The airfield is run by an Air Force Test Center operating location detached from Edwards, and the plant itself is administered by the Air Force Industrial Plants Division at Wright-Patterson as the executive agent, with private contractors operating most of the buildings. That structure matters to a calibration conversation, because the oversight on this site is Air Force and DCMA rather than FAA.
The headline fact in Palmdale today is the B-21. The Air Force and Northrop Grumman broke ground in late September 2026 on a new final assembly line at Plant 42, adding roughly a million square feet of production space to support a planned twenty-five percent increase in annual production capacity, funded in part by federal reconciliation money alongside Northrop investment disclosed earlier in 2026. Lockheed Martin Aeronautics, including the Skunk Works, operates from 1011 Lockheed Way. Lockheed filed layoff notices at Palmdale in 2024, so we describe it as operating rather than as growing. NASA Armstrong keeps its aircraft operations facility in Building 703, a 425,000 square foot hangar it took over in 2007.
We publish no employment figure for any of this. The City says the cluster supports thousands of jobs, the Air Force and Northrop give no number, and every figure in circulation traces back to an estimate. Naming the programs and the addresses we could actually verify is worth more than a headcount nobody will stand behind.
What airframe assembly and flight test actually send out for calibration
Large airframe assembly is a torque business before it is anything else. Torque wrenches, torque multipliers, torque screwdrivers and torque transducers across the full range, plus the analyzers used to check them on the floor, are the highest-volume and highest-consequence items in the building, because the torque value on a flight-hardware fastener is part of the as-built record. Around them sit force gauges, pull and tension testers for rivet, Hi-Lok and lockbolt pull-off verification, wire-crimp pull testers for harnesses, load cells, crane and hoist load cells, dynamometers and jack scales, and the weight-and-balance scale systems used to weigh an aircraft, which is a certification-grade measurement in its own right.
Dimensional work on an airframe runs large and small at once. Indicators, bore gages, depth gages, micrometers, calipers, gage pins and thread gages on the detail side; gage blocks, ball bars, step gages and length artifacts for CMM performance verification; scale bars and length artifacts for laser trackers and photogrammetry, which is how a structure that size actually gets measured; and granite surface plates, straight edges, squares, levels and electronic inclinometers for jig and tooling verification. Hydraulic, pneumatic and fuel-system proof and leak testing adds pressure gauges, transducers, DP transmitters, deadweight testers and vacuum gauges, with gas flow and leak-rate instrumentation behind them. Composite cure cycles add thermocouples, RTDs and oven and autoclave temperature mapping with vacuum-bag pressure instrumentation, which is process control a Nadcap auditor will ask to see. Non-destructive testing adds ultrasonic thickness gauges and UT reference blocks, eddy-current reference standards, hardness test blocks, penetrant-line black-light radiometers and radiographic densitometers.
Flight test and avionics are a separate population again, and it is the one most labs cannot take. RF power sensors and power meters, spectrum analyzers, signal generators, network analyzers, attenuation standards, directional couplers and calibration kits on the electrical and RF side. Oscilloscopes, high-bandwidth probes, frequency counters and frequency standards. Multimeters, calibrators, DC and AC sources, shunts and decade standards. Pitot-static and air data test sets, altimeters and airspeed indicators. Accelerometers, strain indicators and shaker systems for flight-test instrumentation and qualification. Electrical safety analyzers, insulation resistance testers and bonding micro-ohmmeters.
The supply chain the city is paying to import
Palmdale runs an Aerospace Incentive Program funded by Measure AV, and in January 2026 the City Council doubled the maximum new-construction award to $500,000 in two phases and added an award of up to $125,000 for new leases. Both require at least fifty new jobs and a minimum of seventy thousand square feet, and the program explicitly targets businesses supplying critical products and services to the aerospace and defense supply chain. That is a city buying itself a tier-two and tier-three manufacturing base, and every supplier it lands walks in needing a calibration program on day one.
The first project delivered under that program is AS Aerospace, which broke ground in October 2025 at the northwest corner of Division Street and Grand Cypress Avenue: ninety thousand square feet in two phases, roughly a hundred and fifty jobs, relocating and expanding precision fastener manufacturing from Santa Clarita. It makes internally threaded aerospace hardware, and it holds AS9100, Nadcap for heat treatment, non-destructive testing and lube and passivation, and ISO/IEC 17025 for its own testing and calibration labs. A fastener house is the most thread-gage-intensive operation in manufacturing: go and no-go thread rings and plugs, thread measuring wires, pitch micrometers, optical comparators and thread-profile projectors, with gage blocks and length standards behind them. Then tensile and fatigue frames, load cells and extensometers, torque-tension rigs, hardness testers and conductivity meters. And because Nadcap heat treatment means AMS2750-style pyrometry, the furnace thermocouples and the system accuracy test and temperature uniformity survey instrumentation become a scheduled, heavily audited calibration line rather than an annual chore.
Aero Bending Company at 560 Auto Center Drive is the other kind of local supplier: tube bending, welding and brazing, sheet metal, waterjet, CNC machining, pressure testing and penetrant inspection. A pressure-test station and a penetrant line are two of the most obvious recurring calibration needs in the valley, which means pressure gauges, transducers and deadweight testers, bend-radius and ovality gauges, UT wall-thickness gauges, digital angle gauges, weld gauges and process meters, gas flow meters and black-light radiometers. Palmdale Regional Medical Center at 38600 Medical Center Drive adds the clinical list: pipettes, centrifuge tachometry and timers, incubator and freezer probes, autoclave verification, balances with traceable weight sets, defibrillator and electrical-safety analyzers and infusion-pump flow analyzers. One more thing worth saying plainly about this city: Plant 42 work is export-controlled by nature, so ITAR technical-data handling, US-person access and whether an instrument can leave the facility at all are real questions here, and a lab that can answer them is worth more than a lab that is closer.
What we will not claim about Palmdale
Boeing is not on this page as a current employer. A permanent-closure notice was filed in 2026 for its site at 1500 Columbia Way on Plant 42, and while the headcount in that filing is small enough that it may cover one unit rather than the whole operation, the record says closure and we are not going to write around it. The historic Plant 42 programs are heritage, not current work: the U-2 and SR-71 support, the F-5E, the B-1B, the B-2 and Space Shuttle assembly all belong to the 1980s and 1990s, and Shuttle work left Palmdale in 2002. NASA no longer flies SOFIA, which made its final flight in December 2022 and went to the Pima Air and Space Museum, and the DC-8 flying laboratory retired in 2024 to Idaho State University. We do not list a current Building 703 fleet because we could not verify one.
Three more corrections we would rather make ourselves. Antelope Valley Hospital is in Lancaster, not Palmdale, even though it appears in Palmdale-area employment data. The Trader Joe’s food assembly and distribution complex at Avenue M and 10th Street West was announced in 2023 with an anticipated 2024 completion, and we could not confirm it is built, open or hiring, so we describe it as announced and keep food-safety claims off this page until it is confirmed. And we found no FAA Part 145 repair station in Palmdale, so we do not claim one; the more accurate and frankly more impressive thing to say is that Plant 42 is a military production and flight-test facility under Air Force and DCMA oversight.
The regulatory detail most likely to catch a careless page is the air district. Palmdale is in the Antelope Valley Air Quality Management District, not the South Coast district that covers the rest of our service area, and AVAQMD runs roughly thirteen hundred square miles of the northern desert portion of Los Angeles County with Palmdale and Lancaster as its two cities. The standards that genuinely apply here are AS9100 clause 7.1.5.2 traceability, Nadcap, ITAR, DFARS flowdowns including controlled unclassified information handling, legacy MIL-STD process specifications still called out on drawings, ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 rather than the withdrawn Z540.1, and NIST traceability underneath all of it. We keep ISO 13485 and FDA device requirements off this page because we found no medical device manufacturer in Palmdale. The lab is about ninety miles south, on the Los Angeles County route that runs Tuesday and Thursday, with 24, 48 and 72-hour expedited service and on-site calibration for anything that should not travel. All nine disciplines run under one roof: dimensional, electrical and RF, temperature and humidity, pressure, mass, pipettes, force and torque, gas flow and vibration. American Gage has calibrated from inside Orange County since 1968, under current ownership since 1998, with more than a million calibrations performed in an 8,000 sq ft facility, under ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation from A2LA, certificate 4296.01. Standard turnaround is 7–10 business days.

Palmdale calibration FAQs
How far is your lab from Palmdale, and does the distance work?
About 90 miles, roughly an hour and a half to two hours via the SR-57, I-210 and SR-14. Palmdale is on our Tuesday and Thursday Los Angeles County route, and at that distance most customers run consolidated scheduled pickups, 24/48/72-hour expedited service, or on-site calibration for instrumentation that should not travel.
Can you support AS9100 and Nadcap calibration requirements for Plant 42 suppliers?
Yes. We are accredited to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 by A2LA under certificate 4296.01, and every certificate documents as-found and as-left values, measurement uncertainty, NIST traceability and an explicit ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 decision rule with TUR. That is the evidence package AS9100 clause 7.1.5.2 and the Nadcap checklists ask for.
Do you calibrate heat-treat pyrometry and furnace thermocouples?
Yes. Furnace and oven thermocouples, RTDs, controllers and recorders, plus the instrumentation used for system accuracy tests and temperature uniformity surveys, and autoclave and oven temperature mapping for composite cure. This is the recurring calibration load behind Nadcap heat treatment and AMS2750-style pyrometry requirements.
What about ITAR and export-controlled instruments?
Tell us before the instrument moves. Plant 42 work is export-controlled by nature, and the right answer depends on the instrument: some can be handled under controlled conditions at our Placentia lab, and some should be calibrated on site instead so nothing leaves your facility. Call (657) 216-2600 and we will scope it properly rather than guessing.
