Calibration Services in Fontana
Fontana is a steel and logistics town with a measurement load to match: load cells and tensile frames, furnace thermocouples, batch-plant weigh hoppers, truck scales that are legally sealed devices, and fleet torque wrenches in every shop on Slover Avenue. Our lab is about forty-two miles west, and Fontana is on the Friday Inland Empire route.

Three freeways, and two designations worth getting right
Fontana is served by the I-10 across its southern half, the Foothill Freeway across the north, and the I-15 cutting diagonally through the northwestern quadrant, with Sierra Avenue as the arterial that ties all three together. Our Friday route comes in on the 57 to the 60 to the 15 and the 10, about forty-two miles and forty-five to sixty minutes outside of peak. South Fontana, the I-10 corridor around Cherry Avenue and Slover Avenue where most of the heavy industry sits, is a few miles shorter than the civic center.
The Foothill Freeway through Fontana is State Route 210, not Interstate 210. The I-210 designation ends at Lone Hill Avenue in Glendora, in Los Angeles County. Caltrans asked AASHTO to resign the whole corridor as I-210 and there is no record of that approval, which is why Rialto next door still writes State Route 210 in its own circulation element.
Foothill Boulevard is the other one. It is the historic Route 66 alignment, and Caltrans designates it as one of Fontana’s main truck routes, but it is not a state highway here: Streets and Highways Code section 366 names Fontana among the cities whose former Route 66 segments are not state highways, and SR-66 resumes only at the eastern city limit of Rialto. Sierra Avenue is a city major highway on the county congestion management road system, and Cherry Avenue, Slover Avenue, Jurupa Avenue and Valley Boulevard, the former US-99 alignment, are all city arterials. Two freeways people put on Fontana pages by mistake: the SR-60 does not enter the city, running several miles to the south through Ontario and Jurupa Valley, and the I-215 does not either, passing to the east through Colton and San Bernardino.
The steel complex, and why we place it precisely
Fontana was a steel town and the steel is still here, but the plant is not inside the city. California Steel Industries operates at 14000 San Bernardino Avenue, at the northwest corner of San Bernardino and Cherry, and the county’s own environmental filings put that site in unincorporated San Bernardino County inside Fontana’s sphere of influence rather than in the city. The mailing address does not settle jurisdiction. We say so because it is the kind of distinction a plant manager notices immediately, and because the practical point is unchanged: it is a flat-rolled steel complex on a four-hundred-acre site about twelve minutes from Fontana’s industrial core, and its supply chain is Fontana’s supply chain.
Ownership is worth stating correctly too. Nucor holds the majority, having acquired fifty percent from a Vale subsidiary and a further one percent from JFE Steel in a transaction announced in early 2022, with JFE holding the remainder. The complex runs hot rolled, pickled and oiled, cold rolled, galvanized and ERW pipe lines, states ISO 9001:2015 and API Q1 certification, and holds a county permit to add a third galvanizing line and a push-pull pickle line. That product mix is a specific and demanding calibration brief.
Coil and weld qualification work means load cells, proving rings and tensile and universal test frames verified to ASTM E4 and E74 so the mechanical results under A370 and E8 hold up. Thickness and dimensional control means micrometers, snap gauges, reference standards for X-ray and isotope strip gauges, gage blocks, ring and plug gauges, calipers, height gauges and surface plates. Annealing and galvanizing lines mean thermocouples, RTDs, chart recorders and data loggers on reheat furnaces and zinc pots, with bath and pickle-tank thermometers, pH and conductivity meters and coating-weight and coating-thickness gauges alongside. The pipe mill hydrostatic test means pressure gauges, transmitters, deadweight testers and relief-valve test stands. And the mill floor itself means torque wrenches and multipliers for roll changes, hardness testers with Rockwell and Brinell reference blocks, gas flow instrumentation on process gas trains and generators, and crane and hook load-test equipment.
South Fontana: concrete, building products and the scale question
Cemex runs a concrete batch plant at 13200 Santa Ana Avenue that appears on the Caltrans Material Plant Quality Program list of active plants with a 2026 approval date, which is a meaningful detail on a calibration page: a plant approved for state work carries sampling, testing and measurement obligations that someone has to be able to document. Weyerhaeuser’s Fontana Distribution Center at 17400 Slover Avenue handles building materials, close enough to the unincorporated Bloomington edge that the company’s own directions resolve there. Burrtec Waste Industries operates from 9820 Cherry Avenue.
Ready-mix and precast measurement is unglamorous and heavily audited. Batch plants run cement, aggregate, water and admixture weigh hoppers on load cells, with water and admixture meters and aggregate moisture probes. Quality control runs concrete cylinder compression machines whose platen load has to be verified, plus slump cones, air-entrainment meters, unit-weight measures, calibrated cylinder molds, concrete thermometers and maturity loggers, against ASTM C39, C143, C138 and C231 and the laboratory requirements in C1077. Building-products distribution adds length standards, tape measures and lumber moisture meters.
Then there is the question that decides whether a scale program is compliant or merely confident. Truck scales, axle scales, platform and floor scales used commercially are legal-for-trade devices. San Bernardino County’s Agriculture, Weights and Measures division tests commercially used weighing and measuring devices annually and seals the ones that pass, and its own guidance specifically calls out the large commercial scales operated by concrete and shipping companies, which is a precise description of this corridor. Our job is the accredited calibration and the traceable certificate with as-found and as-left data; placing a commercial device back in service is a separately licensed activity under the California Division of Measurement Standards registered service agency rules, so tell us which devices are legal-for-trade and we will scope around that line rather than blurring it.
Distribution, fleets, a hospital and an EV truck plant
Fontana’s other economy is freight. Amazon, Target, Walmart Distribution and Saia LTL Freight all operate here and all appear at the top of the city’s own employer reporting, and Golden State Foods runs a temperature-controlled Quality Custom Distribution center serving several hundred Starbucks locations. We publish no headcount for any of them: the figures in circulation are from the city’s 2023 annual report and we could not reach the primary document, so naming the operations and skipping the numbers is the honest version.
A distribution and fleet operation is a calibration customer whether or not it thinks of itself as one. Truck scales, parcel and dimensioning scales, floor, bench, pallet and forklift scales with traceable mass standards behind them. Torque wrenches, torque sticks, brake and air-system pressure gauges and tire gauges in the fleet shop, which is where annual vehicle inspection and wheel-end torque specifications under federal motor carrier rules actually get satisfied. Refrigerated trailer and cold-room thermometers and data loggers for the cold chain, which is also where the state’s transport refrigeration unit rules and the warehouse air-quality obligations land. Crane, hoist and racking load-test gear.
ZM Trucks has built a plant and regional headquarters in Fontana for electric commercial trucks, terminal tractors and ground support equipment on a roughly ten-acre site. We describe it as announced and ramping rather than in production, because we could not confirm either a street address or current production status. If and when it runs, electric vehicle assembly brings its own bench: insulation resistance testers, hipot sets, DC power analyzers, multimeters and clamp meters, battery test equipment, crimp-force monitors and pull testers for harness assembly, plus dimensional hand tools and torque throughout. Kaiser Permanente Fontana Medical Center at 9961 Sierra Avenue, the city’s largest employer, adds the clinical population: pipettes, balances with traceable weight sets, incubator, refrigerator and freezer probes, autoclave temperature and pressure verification, centrifuge tachometry, and defibrillator, electrical-safety and infusion-pump analyzers.
What we will not claim about Fontana
Auto Club Speedway is not a Fontana landmark on this page. The two-mile oval closed in February 2023, demolition began that October, and most of the land has gone to warehouses. It was also in unincorporated county, never inside city limits. We mention it because it is the first thing most people associate with Fontana, and it has not been there for years.
Several companies commonly attached to Fontana are not here, and we would rather say so than pad the list. We found no evidence of a Lamb Weston facility, no evidence of a Mercury Air operation, and no Pepsi bottling plant in Fontana; the verified Inland Empire bottling plant is Niagara’s in Rialto. The only Fontana plant on the Caltrans active materials list is the Cemex batch plant, and the area’s concrete pipe plant is Thompson Pipe Group in Rialto, not Fontana. We also claim no AS9100, Nadcap or IATF 16949 work in this city, because we could not verify a single aerospace or automotive tier supplier among the employers here. Those standards belong on the pages where they are real, and keeping them off this one is the reason you can trust the rest of it.
What does apply here is ISO 9001 clause 7.1.5.2 measurement traceability, API Q1 and API 5L on the pipe side, the Caltrans material plant program and the ASTM and AASHTO methods behind it, the county weights and measures program and the state Division of Measurement Standards rules for commercial devices, federal motor carrier rules for fleets, Cal/OSHA for cranes, pressure vessels and process safety management where a covered chemical is above threshold, South Coast air district permit and monitoring conditions, state truck and off-road equipment rules, and NIST traceability under all of it. The lab is about forty-two miles west, on the free Friday Inland Empire pickup and delivery route, with expedited 24, 48 and 72-hour service and on-site calibration for anything that cannot leave the plant. All nine disciplines run under one roof: dimensional, electrical and RF, temperature and humidity, pressure, mass, pipettes, force and torque, gas flow and vibration. American Gage has calibrated from inside Orange County since 1968, under current ownership since 1998, with more than a million calibrations performed in an 8,000 sq ft facility. Every certificate carries as-found and as-left data, measurement uncertainty, NIST traceability and the ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 decision rule with TUR, under ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation from A2LA, certificate 4296.01. Standard turnaround is 7–10 business days.

Fontana calibration FAQs
How far is your lab from Fontana?
About 42 miles, roughly 45 to 60 minutes off-peak via the SR-57, SR-60, I-15 and I-10. South Fontana industry along the I-10 at Cherry and Slover is a few miles closer. Fontana is on our free Friday Inland Empire pickup and delivery route.
Do you calibrate truck scales and batch-plant weigh hoppers?
Yes. Truck and axle scales, platform, floor, bench and pallet scales, and batch-plant cement, aggregate, water and admixture weigh systems, with traceable mass standards and ISO/IEC 17025 certificates showing as-found and as-left data. Legal-for-trade devices are separately sealed by San Bernardino County weights and measures, so flag those when you book and we will scope the work accordingly.
Can you verify compression machines and tensile frames?
Yes. Force verification of concrete cylinder compression machines, tensile and universal test frames, load cells, proving rings and extensometers, following ASTM E4 and E74 so results reported under ASTM C39, A370 and E8 stand up to an audit.
Do you handle furnace thermocouples and process temperature instruments?
Yes. Thermocouples, RTDs, controllers, chart recorders and data loggers for reheat furnaces, annealing and galvanizing lines, plus oven and chamber temperature mapping. Our temperature and humidity laboratory covers the range this work needs and every certificate is NIST traceable.
