Calibration Services in Los Alamitos

Los Alamitos is the second-smallest city in Orange County — about 11,800 people in four square miles — and roughly a third of it is a military installation. It is also the closest city in this batch to our lab, and it holds a bearing-overhaul house, a composite satellite-structure plant, an aerospace ducting manufacturer and a 563-employee food plant. Small city, unusually dense measurement.

Eighteen miles, and the corridor corrections that come with it

The run is SR-91 west to the I-605 south, off at Exit 1D — Katella Avenue, the one exit in the table actually labeled Los Alamitos, Orange County. Caltrans District 12 built roadway and safety improvements at that interchange specifically in the city. It is about 18 miles and twenty-odd minutes, the shortest drive of any city in this batch, and when the 91 backs up there is a clean all-arterial alternative: Orangethorpe and La Palma west, Valley View Street south, Katella east.

Three corridors get claimed for Los Alamitos that do not belong to it. The 710 terminates in Long Beach about ten miles west. SR-19’s historical southern end is Los Alamitos Circle, which is in Long Beach, eight miles away, and even that segment was relinquished to the city in 1999 — the name is a trap for anyone working from a map index. And the 22 does not run through city limits; the Seal Beach Boulevard interchange is in Seal Beach. What is true: the Garden Grove Freeway runs immediately south, about a mile down Los Alamitos Boulevard, and the 405 is roughly two miles southwest with Exit 22 signed for Los Alamitos Boulevard by name.

Also true, and useful if you run sites in both counties: Los Alamitos is Orange County Sealer territory while Long Beach and Lakewood next door are the Los Angeles County Agricultural Commissioner’s. Same state statute through the CDFA Division of Measurement Standards, two offices, two sets of registration paperwork — and it maps exactly onto our Monday/Wednesday versus Tuesday/Thursday routes.

The Joint Forces Training Base sets the traceability bar

The Joint Forces Training Base covers 1,319 acres — a meaningful share of a four-square-mile city. It is Department of Defense-owned, Army-operated and California National Guard-controlled, with roughly 850 full-time employees and more than 6,000 Guard and Reserve troops. The 40th Infantry Division is the senior command on post, and Los Alamitos Army Airfield hosts an assault helicopter company of the 140th Aviation Regiment across two runways of 8,002 and 5,902 feet. California Air National Guard, Army Reserve, DHS, FEMA and Cal OES all keep a presence there. The field opened in 1942 as Naval Air Station Los Alamitos and became JFTB in 2000.

Rotary-wing aviation and ground vehicle maintenance generate the most recall-disciplined instrument population we see. Torque wrenches, multipliers, screwdrivers and analyzers lead by volume, with the tightest intervals. Then pressure gauges and transducers, deadweight testers, hydraulic and pneumatic test stands, nitrogen and oxygen servicing gauges. Multimeters, clamp meters, oscilloscopes, insulation and bonding testers, battery and power-quality analyzers. Micrometers, calipers, indicators, bore gages, feeler and go/no-go gages, thread gages.

Rotorcraft adds blade-track and vibration analyzers, rotor balance equipment and control-cable tensiometers; avionics adds pitot-static, altimeter, transponder and nav/comm test sets; recovery operations add jack and hoist load verification, crane load cells and sling proof-load gear. The governing regime is documented NIST-traceable calibration with stated uncertainties and managed recall intervals under ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 and ISO 10012 — which is to say, ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation is the entry ticket for supplying this base and its contractors at all.

A city with a bearing-inspection house in it

Bearing Inspection, Inc. — trading as Aero Services by Timken since Timken acquired it in 2005 — runs an 80,000 square foot facility on Corporate Center Drive doing aerospace bearing inspection, reconditioning, repair and overhaul. It holds FAA repair authority for aircraft anti-friction bearings along with JAA and CAAC approvals and OEM approvals from Pratt & Whitney and GE, serving Bell, Boeing, Honeywell, Rolls-Royce and Sikorsky among others.

That is a business whose entire product is measurement, and it is 18 miles from our dimensional lab. Bearing work lives at micron level: bore and OD gages, air gages, bench micrometers and comparator stands, electronic indicators and gage amplifiers, master rings and setting discs, gage blocks and pin gages, roundness and form testers, surface-roughness profilometers, raceway and taper profile gages, granite surface plates, squares and sine bars, CMM and optical comparator artifacts. Add hardness testers with certified blocks — Rockwell superficial especially — eddy-current and ultrasonic reference standards, UV radiometers for penetrant and magnetic-particle process control, balances for mass-change measurement, particle counters, and temperature probes and data loggers for wash, bake and cure.

Under 14 CFR 145.109, every one of those instruments used to make an airworthiness determination needs calibration against a standard acceptable to the Administrator with records to prove it. That is not a generic aerospace talking point here — it is a named obligation on a named company in this city.

Composites, ducting, printing and a bakery at industrial scale

Alliance Spacesystems, now part of Applied Composites, builds composite structures for satellites and launch vehicles in Los Alamitos — payload structures, antenna reflectors, booms and rigid solar-array substrates, with engineering, manufacturing, integration and final qualification testing. Composite cure is a calibrated process: oven and autoclave temperature mapping, pressure and vacuum gauges, thermocouples and RTDs, prepreg storage humidity and temperature, moisture analyzers and balances, plus large-volume metrology — laser trackers and scanning arms verified against artifacts — and load cells and test frames with extensometers for coupon and structural qualification.

Arrowhead Products on Katella Avenue makes aerospace ducting, hoses and thermal-management products, now within the TransDigm portfolio. Ducting qualification is pressure and leak work at its core — test gauges, transducers, deadweight testers, flow meters and burst and proof-pressure instrumentation — plus ovality and wall-thickness gauging, thread gages, and furnace and oven surveys where AMS 2750 pyrometry governs forming, brazing and heat treat.

Then the non-obvious ones. Bar Bakers on Bloomfield Street employs 563 people, making it the city’s second-largest employer and genuine high-volume process manufacturing: checkweighers, platform and bench scales, weigh hoppers and test weights for net-content compliance under NIST Handbook 133; oven and proofer thermocouples, probe thermometers and temperature mapping; metal-detector and X-ray test cards; pH, conductivity, water-activity and refractometer instruments; CIP flow and temperature. Mittera California — the former Trend Offset Printing operation — runs commercial web offset, which means densitometers, spectrophotometers and colorimeters with certified reference tiles, roller durometers and nip gauges, ink pH and conductivity, dryer thermocouples and solvent-vapor monitoring for AQMD. Epson America’s US corporate headquarters sits on Katella as well; it is HQ, sales and service rather than a plant, but product test benches and environmental chambers still need verification.

The closest city on the Monday and Wednesday route

UCI Health – Los Alamitos on Katella Avenue is the city’s largest employer with about 1,059 people and 167 licensed beds. It carried the name Los Alamitos Medical Center until UCI Health took over management and rebranded it in March 2024, so any record still calling it a Tenet hospital is out of date. We cover its clinical population in house: pipettes, centrifuges, autoclave verification, sphygmomanometers, analytical balances and weight sets, pharmacy and blood-bank monitoring, defibrillator and electrical-safety analyzers, ventilator and medical-gas instrumentation, and radiation survey meters.

At 18 miles, this is the shortest run in the batch, and distance is what makes the useful things practical. Expedited calibration at 24, 48 and 72 hours is real when nothing disappears into freight. On-site calibration is straightforward for equipment that should not travel — test stands, chambers, surface plates, oven and furnace surveys to AMS 2750, Kaye validation for IQ/OQ/PQ. And because satellite structures and military ducting are export-controlled, a US lab with US technicians twenty minutes away removes a problem rather than creating one.

One local accuracy note: Los Alamitos Race Course uses a Los Alamitos postal address but sits physically in Cypress. We mention it because everyone who works here knows it, and because getting that kind of detail right is the same discipline as getting a measurement right. American Gage has calibrated from inside Orange County since 1968, with more than a million calibrations from an 8,000 sq ft facility. Every certificate documents as-found and as-left values, uncertainty, NIST traceability and the Z540.3 decision rule with TUR, under A2LA ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation, certificate 4296.01.

Los Alamitos calibration FAQs

How far is your lab from Los Alamitos?

About 18 miles — roughly 22 to 30 minutes via SR-91 west and the I-605 south to the Katella Avenue exit. It is the closest city on this part of our map, and it sits on our free Monday and Wednesday Orange County pickup route.

Can you meet military and National Guard calibration requirements?

Yes. Our certificates document NIST traceability, measurement uncertainty, as-found and as-left values and the ANSI/NCSL Z540.3 decision rule with TUR, under ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accreditation from A2LA — the evidence package DoD and Guard maintenance programs and their contractors require.

Do you support FAA repair station calibration records?

We do. 14 CFR 145.109(b) requires inspection and test equipment to be calibrated against a standard acceptable to the Administrator, traceable to NIST, with records. Our certificates are written to be the record, including uncertainty and the decision rule applied.

Is Los Alamitos in Orange County or Los Angeles County for weights and measures?

Orange County. Devices used commercially in Los Alamitos are registered, tested and sealed by the Orange County Agricultural Commissioner / Sealer of Weights and Measures, while neighboring Long Beach and Lakewood fall to the Los Angeles County office. If you run sites in both, they are two separate filings.
